Donald Trump Returns to Washington Hilton Under Tight Security After Foiled Assassination

U.S. President Donald Trump is set to return Friday to the Washington Hilton for the first time since an alleged assassination attempt at the hotel forced the cancellation of the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner earlier this year, with authorities expected to impose heightened security measures for the high-profile event.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. President Donald Trump is set to return Friday to the Washington Hilton for the first time since an alleged assassination attempt at the same venue forced the abrupt cancellation of the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner earlier this year.

Trump is scheduled to deliver remarks at the annual “Road to Majority” conference organized by the Faith and Freedom Coalition, a powerful evangelical political organization that has been one of the Republican president’s most loyal allies.

The appearance marks Trump’s first visit to the landmark Washington hotel since April 25, when authorities say an armed attacker carrying a shotgun attempted to breach security surrounding the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, triggering a major security response and forcing organizers to postpone the event.

According to federal prosecutors, the suspect, identified as 31-year-old California resident Cole Tomas Allen, allegedly attempted to storm a security checkpoint protecting the event and fired a shotgun at a Secret Service agent during what authorities described as a planned attack targeting Trump and senior members of his administration.

Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were swiftly evacuated from the hotel as Secret Service agents secured the area and neutralized the threat before it could reach the ballroom where hundreds of journalists, government officials, and guests had gathered.

Allen has pleaded not guilty to charges alleging that he attempted to assassinate the president.

Following the incident, Trump publicly questioned the security of the venue, describing the Washington Hilton as “not a particularly secure building.”

Friday’s return to the hotel is expected to take place under significantly heightened security measures.

A U.S. Secret Service official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the agency continuously evaluates and updates its security protocols to address evolving threats facing the president and other protected officials.

“While the existing security plan at the April 2026 White House Correspondents’ Dinner was effective in interdicting an identified threat, the agency continually reviews our security posture and will make adjustments as necessary,” the official said.

The latest incident came amid a period of intense political division and rising security concerns in the United States. Trump has survived two previous assassination attempts since 2024, underscoring growing fears over political violence as the country navigates an increasingly polarized political environment.

Despite the security concerns, the president’s participation in the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference highlights the enduring political alliance between Trump and evangelical conservatives. The organization has strongly backed many of Trump’s policy priorities, including his efforts to restrict transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports and his broader conservative social agenda.

“There has never been a bigger champion for families and people of faith than President Trump,” a White House official said ahead of the event.

However, not all members of Trump’s religious base remain fully aligned with the administration.

Some Christian supporters of Israel have criticized Trump’s recent ceasefire agreement involving Iran, while anti-abortion activists have expressed frustration over what they view as insufficiently aggressive action on abortion restrictions.

The Washington Hilton occupies a unique place in presidential history and American political life.

For decades, the hotel has served as the venue for the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner and numerous presidential events involving administrations from both political parties.

It is also remembered as the site of the 1981 assassination attempt against President Ronald Reagan, who was shot and wounded outside the hotel but survived the attack.

Following the cancellation of this year’s correspondents’ dinner, organizers announced plans to hold a smaller replacement event later this summer at a different Washington hotel.

As Trump returns to one of Washington’s most recognizable political venues, his appearance is expected to symbolize both resilience in the face of repeated threats and the increasingly complex security challenges confronting American political leaders in a deeply divided era.
