PUP Expands Access to Quality Education with Opening of Leyte Campus
The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Leyte Campus was created under Republic Act 11786 and was formally inaugurated on September 5, 2024. Situated in Barangay Calaguise in the Municipality of Leyte, it serves as the university’s first campus in the Visayas region.

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) has taken a significant step in broadening access to quality public higher education with the opening of its new campus in Leyte an expansion that underscores the university’s continuing commitment to academic excellence and regional development.
The PUP Leyte Campus officially began operations in the second semester of Academic Year 2024–2025 under the leadership of Campus Director Dan E. Dalac. The establishment of the campus marks a milestone for students in the province and neighboring communities who seek affordable yet high-quality tertiary education closer to home.
Students and Admissions
The campus is primarily intended to serve qualified students from underprivileged communities, including those from nearby municipalities such as Tabango, Calubian, San Isidro, and Villaba.
During its inaugural academic year in September 2024, the campus welcomed around 150 students. For Academic Year 2026–2027, online registration for the PUP College Entrance Test (PUPCET) was set from December 2025 through February 2026.
As a state university, the institution provides free higher education in accordance with Republic Act 10931.
Located in Barangay Calasigue, Leyte, the new campus offers degree programs designed to respond to both industry demands and community needs. Among the initial academic programs available are:
- Bachelor of Science in Information Technology
- Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship
- Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, major in Marketing Management
University officials emphasized that the expansion reflects PUP’s mission to democratize access to education through academic excellence, innovation, and responsive community engagement. By situating programs in regions where educational opportunities may be limited, the university aims to empower more young Filipinos to pursue higher education and contribute meaningfully to local and national progress.
The new campus is expected not only to strengthen the academic foundation of its students but also to cultivate professionals equipped with practical skills and a strong sense of civic responsibility.
As PUP opens this new chapter in Leyte, the institution reaffirms its enduring role as a catalyst for inclusive growth and nation-building through education. #PUPLEYTE

PUP Leyte Strengthens Regional Development Through Industry-Driven Degree Programs
In a region steadily embracing digital transformation and grassroots enterprise, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Leyte Campus is positioning itself as a catalyst for inclusive growth through the launch of three cornerstone degree programs: Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship, and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, major in Marketing Management.
The programs are more than academic offerings—they are strategic responses to the evolving demands of the modern economy. Designed to equip students with practical competencies, technological fluency, and entrepreneurial vision, the degrees aim to bridge the gap between higher education and the realities of local and national industries.
At the heart of this initiative is the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT), a program tailored to meet the surging demand for digital professionals in both public and private sectors. As businesses, government units, and institutions transition to digital platforms, the need for skilled IT practitioners continues to grow. Through hands-on training in programming, systems development, network management, and data solutions, the program seeks to produce graduates capable of driving innovation within their communities.
Equally significant is the Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship, which encourages students to become job creators rather than job seekers. Grounded in enterprise development, business planning, financial literacy, and innovation management, the program reflects a growing recognition that micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are the backbone of the Philippine economy. By nurturing entrepreneurial mindsets, the university hopes to inspire graduates to establish sustainable ventures that generate employment and stimulate local commerce.
Complementing these is the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, major in Marketing Management, a program focused on strategic communication, consumer behavior, branding, and market analytics. In an era defined by digital platforms and rapidly shifting consumer trends, marketing professionals play a vital role in ensuring that products and services reach the right audiences. The program integrates traditional marketing principles with contemporary digital strategies, preparing students to navigate competitive business landscapes.
These academic directions align closely with the national development thrusts of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), which has consistently emphasized outcomes-based education, industry linkage, and regional relevance. Through its policies and quality assurance frameworks, CHED encourages higher education institutions to craft programs that respond to labor market needs while maintaining rigorous academic standards.
CHED’s mandate under Republic Act No. 7722 highlights the importance of accessible, quality tertiary education that contributes to nation-building. By supporting state universities and colleges in expanding program offerings in key growth areas—such as information technology and entrepreneurship—the commission reinforces its commitment to producing globally competitive graduates.
In manifesting this vision, PUP’s program development reflects CHED’s emphasis on competency-based curricula, experiential learning, and partnerships with industry stakeholders. These frameworks ensure that graduates are not only theoretically grounded but also equipped with practical skills demanded by employers and enterprises alike.
University officials underscore that the introduction of these programs is not merely about increasing enrollment figures but about cultivating a generation capable of transforming local economies. For students in Leyte and neighboring communities, access to these degree programs represents an opportunity to participate meaningfully in the digital economy and the expanding entrepreneurial ecosystem.
As higher education continues to evolve amid technological disruption and economic shifts, the synergy between PUP’s academic expansion and CHED’s policy direction signals a broader national commitment: empowering Filipino youth through relevant, high-quality education that drives innovation, resilience, and sustainable development.
