MANILA, Philippines — The Ateneo community is in deep mourning following the heartbreaking deaths of two promising basketball players, Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, who tragically drowned during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora on Monday, June 8.
In an official statement, Ateneo de Manila University confirmed the passing of the two student-athletes, describing the incident as a devastating loss not only for the Blue Eagles basketball program but for the entire university community.

“The entire Ateneo community mourns the loss of Rene and Divine. The University extends its heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, teammates, coaches, and loved ones. We ask the community to keep them in their prayers during this most difficult time,” the university stated.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves throughout Philippine collegiate basketball, particularly because both players represented the future and promise of the Ateneo Blue Eagles.
Nineteen-year-old Rene Baterbonia was regarded as one of the brightest young talents in Philippine basketball. A standout player from Ateneo de Davao, he earned national recognition after leading the Davao Region to a gold medal victory in the 2025 Palarong Pambansa in Ilocos Norte, where he was also named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. His exceptional performances continued this year as he guided Davao Region back to the championship game in Agusan del Sur, although the team ultimately fell short against Calabarzon.

Baterbonia had only recently arrived in Manila on June 4 to begin a new chapter with Ateneo. He was expected to make his highly anticipated debut for the Blue Eagles in UAAP Season 89 later this year. For many basketball fans, coaches, and teammates, his untimely death represents the loss of a promising career that was just beginning to unfold on the national stage.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old Divine Adili, a Nigerian student-athlete, had already made his mark in the UAAP. During Season 88, Adili averaged 8.4 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, playing a key role in helping Ateneo secure a sixth-place finish with a 6-8 record. Known for his athleticism, determination, and strong presence on the court, Adili had become an important member of the Blue Eagles roster and a respected figure among his teammates.
Beyond statistics and achievements, both young men were students, teammates, friends, and sons whose lives touched many people. Their deaths serve as a painful reminder of how fragile life can be and how quickly circumstances can change.

The incident has also sparked conversations about safety protocols during team-building activities, particularly those involving outdoor and water-based events. While such activities are designed to strengthen camaraderie and build trust among athletes, the tragedy underscores the importance of ensuring the highest standards of safety and supervision.

In response to the incident, Ateneo assured the public that support is being provided to the families of the victims, as well as to teammates, coaches, and members of the university community affected by the tragedy.

“The University is providing support to the families of Rene and Divine, as well as to their teammates and members of the Ateneo community affected by this tragedy,” the university said.

As the Blue Eagles program and the broader Ateneo community grieve, tributes continue to pour in from fellow athletes, fans, alumni, and supporters across the country. The loss of Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili leaves an irreplaceable void in Philippine collegiate basketball, but their contributions, dedication, and passion for the sport will be remembered by those whose lives they touched.

At a time when words often fall short, the nation joins Ateneo in mourning two young athletes whose dreams, talents, and futures were taken far too soon.
