Police said the deadly incident occurred between 10:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. at the family’s rented residence located in the Godown Road area under Raipur municipality.
According to investigators, Antar entered the house carrying a sharp weapon before launching a violent assault on Shahinur Begum and her daughters. All four victims sustained critical injuries during the attack.
The victims’ desperate cries for help echoed through the neighborhood, prompting nearby residents to rush toward the house.
As the suspect attempted to flee the scene, local residents pursued him through the area. They eventually caught him and subjected him to a severe beating before authorities could fully intervene.
Police later transported Antar to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Community Overwhelmed by Tragedy
The horrific killings have left residents in deep shock.
Neighbors described the family as quiet individuals who had lived in the rented home for several years after relocating from Cumilla.
According to police and local residents, Shahinur Begum had endured years of hardship following the death of her husband, Kamal, who reportedly died from electrocution several years ago.
Since then, she had been raising her children alone while living in the Raipur residence.
In addition to her three daughters, Shahinur is survived by a son. The devastating attack has now left the surviving family members facing unimaginable grief.
Victims Succumbed to Their Injuries
Medical officials confirmed that two of the daughters died before reaching medical care.
Mamunur Rashid, Resident Medical Officer at Raipur Upazila Health Complex, said Ikra Akter and Shifa Akter were declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Their mother, Shahinur Begum, initially survived the attack but later succumbed to her injuries while receiving emergency treatment.
Meanwhile, the eldest daughter, Saima Akter, fought for her life for several hours.
Doctors arranged for her transfer to a hospital in Dhaka due to the severity of her injuries. However, she died while being transported to the capital at approximately 5:00 p.m., according to Raipur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Shaheen Miah.
With Saima’s death, the family lost four members within a matter of hours.
Police Face Violent Crowd
The shocking nature of the attack triggered widespread anger among local residents. Police officers responding to the incident encountered an increasingly agitated crowd gathered outside the crime scene.
According to Superintendent of Police Md Abu Tareq, at least six to seven police personnel suffered injuries after being struck by bricks thrown by angry members of the crowd while officers attempted to restore order and secure the area.
Additional police units were deployed to disperse the gathering and stabilize the situation. Authorities eventually regained control after several tense moments.
Investigation Continues
Investigators have not yet established the motive behind the killings. Police are examining whether the attack stemmed from a personal dispute or whether other individuals may have been involved. Authorities are also reviewing the suspect’s relationship with the victims.
According to police and local residents, Antar Mazumder had reportedly visited the family’s home on numerous occasions before the incident.
Investigators are now interviewing witnesses, collecting forensic evidence, and reconstructing the sequence of events to determine what led to the deadly attack.
Officials emphasized that no conclusions regarding motive have yet been reached.
Bodies Sent for Autopsy
Following legal procedures, the bodies of Shahinur Begum and her three daughters were transferred to the Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations. The autopsies are expected to help investigators determine the precise causes of death and provide additional forensic evidence.
Police said the investigation remains active and that all possible angles are being examined.
The quadruple killing has sparked grief and outrage across Bangladesh, highlighting ongoing concerns over violent crimes targeting families and women.
The incident also raises questions about community safety, the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s repeated visits to the household, and the dangers posed by mob justice, which claimed the life of the alleged attacker before formal legal proceedings could take place.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and allow investigators to complete their work as detectives continue gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.
Police said additional information will be released as the investigation progresses and more facts surrounding one of the country’s most disturbing acts of violence in recent months become clear.
